The role of the Sacristan is to oversee the mass and by doing so assists with the following:
• Prepares the altar (including key to tabernacle), lectionaries, presider’s missals, and gifts.
• Lights the candles.
• Turns on the lights and sound system.
• Ensures the scheduled ministers are present (altar servers, lectors, eucharistic ministers & ushers).
• In cases where assigned ministers are not available and did not look for their sub, sacristans look for replacement ministers who are not scheduled but attending mass.
• Prepares chair and POF binder for the deacon (Deacon Tom) when present.
• Power Point: Unless there is a volunteer for this task, we kindly ask that you operate the Power Point slides so that it is consistent with the flow of the mass.
• During certain circumstances such as a shortage of minister(s), as an exception to the rule of the Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, you may serve multiple roles (as Lector or EM).
28. In liturgical celebrations each person, minister, or layman, who has an office to perform, should do all of, but only, those parts which pertain to his office by the nature of the rite and the principles of liturgy.
* In case of your absence, please arrange with other sacristans to cover your preferred mass.
If you are unable to serve in your capacity as a Sacristan but attending mass, we ask that you assist as Greeter. We encourage more ministers to provide a warm atmosphere by welcoming and greeting parishioners and visitors at any of the three entrances of our Church.
In addition to your preferred mass, please consider and be available to serve at other masses where there is a shortage of available ministers.
